Alice Ray is a long-time social entrepreneur with a history of crossing boundaries to create new cultural pathways. In the 80’s, she was first to introduce widescale empathy training into schools, with Second Step, now the most widely used SEL and violence-prevention curriculum in the world, and travelled to Central America in the middle of the Contra War to study the role of non-violence in revolutionary settings. She completed an MBA to better translate social value into economic value, so mission-driven enterprises can be sustained. In the 90’s, she broke new ground in teaching SEL skills through filmmaking, designed groundbreaking interactive, software that played with the sense of self, to travel with the Lollapalooza concert tour. In 1997, with Sarah Berg she co-founded Ripple Effects to leverage the potential of emerging technologies to tailor, contextualize and ensure greater fidelity in providing evidence based, SEL, behavior and mental health supports to widely diverse students in widely diverse schools. Since then she has continually nudged the field to bridge the divides between academic and social-emotional learning, between social-emotional learning and social justice, and now between two kinds of AI: Artificial Intelligence and Authentic Intelligence. These efforts have earned her 8 regional Emmys, more than a dozen national film awards, 29 software awards, writing awards and leadership awards from groups as diverse as Business Schools at the University of Washington and UC Berkeley, the National Association of Women Business Owners, the LA Commission of Women and the Association of Federal Investigators.
Alice Ray’s Focus Talk at The Future’s Fest
Her talk at the Futures Institute will focus on how to prepare learners to survive and thrive
through these big challenges: Extremely rapid rates of change, inevitable conflict in the face of inequality and simple human difference, and an end-time/”future not there” mentality related not only to climate change, but to the very personal impacts of trauma and change on the human psyche.
